Hello... new to this tribe—here to share!

I'm new to this tribe. Just wanted to introduce myself.

I started a blog in April where I share tidbits of print production management, knowledge, processes, and design fun!

In my blog entries, I try to provide updates based on my experience working in this industry, which can sometimes only be summed up by the time spent DOING. Thus... I hope to shed light on all the things they can't teach in school—for the beginning designer to the experienced and production managers, folks in between.

I welcome your feedback and comments and hope you can join me on this journey! I am always open to suggestions too! Feel free to pass the url onto folks in the design community.
Thanks!
Bridget

This weeks topic is the importance of QUALITY! It's a HUGE help when editing documents.

or on twitter @FabrcationMastr — linked to all kinds of great folks in the branding and innovation industries. I'm a pro retweeter. ;~)

D.I.Y. Graphic/Web Design

I was just wondering if is there anybody in here has ever learned graphic and/or web design on their own? I mean not going to college for it or anything. I am currently going to college and frankly I sometimes I feel like I am not getting much out of it except a load of stress and more questions unanswered. The instructors seem to leave us on our own and expect us to get it all right the first time. Also, they seem to lean more towards a pro-business, pro-corporate side of the field. It's something I am not too into. I am more interested in the artistic and creative side. My overall goal is get together with 2 or 3 other like minded designers and start our own collective. I still need to learn more though.

I was wondering if anybody has done this and what tips they might have? I am not happy with the current situation I find myself in. Thanks in advance.

My main pic is a postcard in which I want to design something like it. What advise can anyone give me for the best process to make photos like the ones found inside the letters? I tried all kinds of different ways, but it's just not looking right. This postcard is also a little vintage. Anyone have any suggestions what I could do through Photshop?
Thanks in advance!

Something odd is happening with a file of mine. One of the layers has a Bevel & Emboss, Drop Shadow, and Color Overlay applied to it. When the file in flattened, Photoshop seems to be discarding the Bevel & Emboss and Drop Shadow effects. Has this ever happened to any of you before?

print brokerage question

hello people...
I am a graphic artist in Puerto Rico. Digital printing costs are really high here and I usually print 4x6 flyers and business cards in Miami, with PK Graphics. I am considering the idea of becoming a "print broker"..a new term for me. basically, regardless of wether I design the artwork or not..I could be the middle man between clients and printers. I found Zoo Printing, which gives great trade rates, but they are in CA and don't ship to PR. They print in quantities of less that 5,000. Pk only does 5,000 or more, gang run. Anyway, my question is..

Does anyone know of a good digital printer in the FLA area (it's closest to where I live, so shipping should be less), than gives good print brokerage prices?

All responses appreciated. Thank you!

Illustrator text silliness - help, anyone?

Text boxes in Illustrator CS and CS2 suddenly do not allow the text tool to select characters orr words.

The box can be selected with the selection pointers, and the type face, size, and color can be changed by means of the font palette and menu. But individual characters and/or words cannot be selected or changed.

Has anyone else run into this? Am I missing some command? I am being driven back to Freehand to get things done!

Thanks,
if you live in reach of oakland, you can come help too. just drop me a line.

so far, people are really grooving on the fact
that i am blogging with pictures and stuff
each step of the way as i make this mural.

seems like some of you might be interested in checking it out

http://p207.ezboard.com/ftheemptyroomfrm33.showMessage?topicID=17.topic

because of the timeline its not a fully participatory community mural in the traditional sense. but as i go around asking for help, this mural's community gets larger and larger.

also fascinating is this idea that the internet could be used to broaden a mural's community. i hadn't thought of that before.

anyway, enjoy!

hi. im birthing this forum that focuses mostly on art and left politics.

its all fresh and new and waiting for instigator types to help shape the place. hardly anyone in there right now but it has a lot of potential. who ever gets involved at this point would be key in developing the character of the place.

you can put pictures and stuff in each post.

im still adding a forum or two more and working on the design of the place.

I found some for Arabic, but Arabic doesn't have all the same letters as Persian. Please let me know if you have any ideas!!!

Design a tribe.net user profile!

Tribe.net is going to debut a new feature very soon: you'll be able to select from a library of custom stylesheets to apply to your profile. Right now I'm designing a bunch of styles to go out with the release, but we'd like to showcase user-created styles too.

If you're a CSS-savvy web designer, we're looking for template designs. We're running a little contest until the end of the month -- submit your style concept as a JPEG to profiledesign@tribe.net by April 1st, and we'll pick the best designs and feature them in our style library. If chosen, your design will be credited with your name, which will be linked to your user profile. The best design will also win an iPod shuffle.

This will be a great way to get exposure for your skills, as every tribe.net user will see the style library page. If you're interested in creating a style, check out the Profile Design Contest tribe:

http://profiledesign.tribe.net/

That tribe is moderated by me, and I'll be answering questions and posting some of my design concepts, so you can get an idea of what's involved in creating a style.

If you want just the basics, I've also posted the contest details as a listing:

It seems like most of you are doing things you enjoy, but aren't what you want to to! I should change the to " Graphic dreaming in it's entirety."

Why don't you guys start going after your dream proffesions?
What types of things do you want to do in the future, that you aren't already doing???

And NOTHING ( NOTHING ) is to extravegant. " I WANT TO RUB GASOLINE ON FIRE HYDRANTS!" Doesn't matter...

What about those guys who started a whole buisness of a photoshop action they made that turns home photos into iPod adds?

What do think is the next big Graphic media craze? It seems clip art is catching on. Older stuff. Reproductions of old newspapers, ect...
Can we really tell our own future? Or does it just happen?
